Oba Ghandi Olaoye, the Soun of Ogbomoso, recently spoke about Nigeria’s economic struggles and the impact on its citizens, particularly in relation to vote buying. In a dinner hosted by friends in the United States, he expressed admiration for Nigerians’ resilience despite severe economic hardships such as poverty, unemployment, and inflation.

Olaoye, who has spent most of his life abroad and only visited Ogbomoso three times in 30 years, revealed his recent observations about the town’s development. He expressed disappointment with the slow progress and the lack of essential services like water, electricity, and good roads.

He noted that the dire economic conditions have forced many Nigerians into a situation where they are dependent on handouts for survival, which in turn makes them more susceptible to accepting money in exchange for their votes. Olaoye criticized the government’s performance and the inadequate provision of basic needs, attributing these issues to the high rate of vote buying in elections.

Reflecting on his own experiences and observations, he highlighted the pervasive challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians and the critical role of hope and faith in their daily lives.
