NLC Issues 7 Fresh Demands to Tinubu Government
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has outlined seven demands to the Tinubu administration in a recent communique signed by President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja. These demands were announced following the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday.
1. Policy Reversal: The NLC calls for a reversal of harmful policies that have exacerbated the current economic crisis. The government is urged to implement policies focused on the welfare of the people, job creation, and equitable resource distribution.
2. Day of Mourning: The NEC has mandated the national leadership to designate a Day of Mourning to honor those injured or killed in the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.
3. Accountability: The NLC demands an independent investigation into the violence against protesters. Those responsible for these acts must be held accountable, and all unlawfully detained protesters should be released immediately.
4. Dialogue and Engagement: The NEC urges the federal government to engage in meaningful dialogue with protest representatives, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to address the issues and end the national crisis.
5. Immediate Relief Measures: The government is called upon to provide immediate relief measures, including direct food aid, subsidies on essential goods, and social safety nets that effectively reach the populace.
6. Stop Politically Motivated Meddling: The NEC demands that the federal government restrain officials, particularly the Minister of Labour and the Registrar of Trade Unions, from interfering with workers’ rights and political participation. The NLC calls for the withdrawal of unsolicited advice from the Registrar of Trade Unions to prevent industrial conflict.
7. Strengthening Solidarity: The NEC encourages all Nigerian workers to remain united and resolute in their demands for improved governance. Solidarity is emphasized as a crucial strength in amplifying the voices of the people and seeking justice.
The communique emphasizes the need for the government to address these issues promptly to avoid further unrest and ensure the protection of democratic rights.
