a long winding road
a young girl was walking on a path,
when she saw an old woman leaning on a staff
coming from the opposite direction
when the young girl came closer to the old woman,
she asked,
mama, where have you come from?
to which the old woman replied,
a long winding road,
where is this road?
and how far is the distance?
asked the young girl,
replied the old woman,
I don’t know how far it is
but I’ve been travelling this road,
since as a toddler,
elders held my hand for me to take
one step at a time and
another step at a go,
to learn to walk
when I stood on my feet,
and the elders let go my hand,
I’ve been travelling this road
on my own, since
and haven’t looked back
that is why I told you earlier that
I’ve come from a long winding road
said the young girl to the old woman, can you retrace your steps? for I will follow suit to see the things you’ve seen, and to walk on the paths you’ve travelled
replied the old woman,
I’ve climbed many mountains
I’ve crossed many rivers
I’ve walked many paths and
have crossed many lanes
even if a wealthy person,
offers me all her wealth for me to retrace my steps,
I can’t remember, all the mountains I’ve climbed
I can’t remember, all the rivers I’ve crossed
I can’t remember, all the paths, I’ve walked
this is why I told you earlier,
I’ve travelled, a long winding road
