Vacant Olofun Stool: Irele Youths appeals to ODSG

The Coalition of Irele Progressive Youth Movement, a non-governmental, non – political group has appealed to the Ondo State Government and other stakeholders, demanding immediate action on the prolonged vacancy of the Olofun of Ode Irele stool.

The group made the appeal on Tuesday, during a strategic meeting held with the Executive Chairman of Irele Local Government, Hon. Olajide Akinfe.

The meeting which was well attended with the Council of Ijamas, heads of the ruling houses and security operatives, the youth decried the negative impact of the seven-year leadership vacuum on the community, citing insecurity, lack of direction, and growing social unrest.

In a letter submitted to key stakeholders and made available to Ikale Voice Newspaper, the Co-ordinator of the Coalition of Irele Progressive Youth Movement, Comrade Akinboyo Ayodeji appealed to Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to intervene and fast-track the approval for the selection of a new Olofun.

According to the letter, Comrade Akinboyo pointed that, “the coalition warned that failure to act within one month could worsen the existing instability in the area.”

Part of the letter reads, “The absence of a traditional leader has resulted in insecurity, inability to appease the gods, and lack of communal direction. We humbly appeal for urgent intervention to install a new Olofun, preferably within one month. This will restore peace, order, and development to our community.”

Responding to the development, Hon. Olajide Akinfe assured the youths of his commitment to resolving the issue. He disclosed that he had already met with Governor Aiyedatiwa and was directed to officially communicate the matter in writing. He confirmed that he has met with the Council of Chiefs and heads of ruling houses, who have also submitted the necessary documentation for government approval.

Akinfe appealed for continued peace and unity among the youth, urging them to collaborate with authorities in combating crime and promoting progress in the state.

In separate meeting, the heads of the three ruling houses in Ode Irele- Orunbemekun, Jagboju, and Oyenusi represented by High Chiefs Ajibowu, Aroloye, and Ajigbore respectively, affirmed their cooperation with the local government and disclosed that they are awaiting official approval from the state government.

The traditional leaders commended the youth for their peaceful advocacy, noting that their engagement has drawn fresh attention to the long-standing issue and could help accelerate the selection process.

The Olofun stool has remained vacant for seven years following the death of Oba C.O Lebi in 2018, leaving the community without a unifying figure.
