In a moving ceremony held on Friday in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, Nigerians bid a final farewell to Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the esteemed designer of the national flag. Akinkunmi, who passed away at the age of 87, was laid to rest at his residence in Aba Paanu, Kuola Estate, Elebu area of Ibadan.
The well-attended funeral service was organized by the Oyo State government at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium Liberty, Oke Ado Ibadan. The event saw a gathering of family, friends, and officials, all of whom paid tribute to Akinkunmi’s lasting impact on Nigeria’s symbol of unity and pride. The service was conducted by ministers from the Gospel Faith Mission International (GOFAMINT).
Known affectionately as “Mr. Flag Man,” Akinkunmi was celebrated for his significant contribution to Nigeria’s national identity. His flag design, conceived while he was a student at Norwood Technical College in London in 1959, features green and white colors that symbolize Nigeria’s lush vegetation and peace.
Acting Governor Bayo Lawal delivered a heartfelt tribute, praising Akinkunmi for his patriotism and humility. Lawal highlighted how the flag’s colors represent Nigeria’s natural resources and the hope for tranquility among its diverse people. He urged Nigerians to emulate Akinkunmi’s spirit of service, emphasizing that true patriotism is reflected in actions rather than mere words.
Pastor Olufemi Solomon, General Secretary of GOFAMINT, delivered a compelling sermon titled “The Day of Accountability,” focusing on legacy, responsibility, and living a purposeful life. He reflected on Akinkunmi’s life and achievements, stressing that the flag is a profound statement of identity and unity for Nigeria. Solomon encouraged attendees to consider their contributions to society and to embody the values of service, humility, and love for the nation.
Family members and friends shared poignant memories of Akinkunmi’s kindness and dedication. His daughter, Oloyode Folake, spoke of her father’s unwavering love for Nigeria, noting that he viewed the flag as more than just a symbol but as a representation of the dreams and aspirations of every Nigerian.
The ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including past and present government officials, who came to pay their respects to a man whose legacy will continue to inspire national unity and pride.
