Why Some Northern Leaders Want Jonathan Back
Several Northern leaders are expressing a strong desire for former President Goodluck Jonathan to return to politics, focusing on the 2027 presidential election. Despite his current focus on international assignments and humanitarian work, there are growing calls for Jonathan to reconsider a presidential bid.
Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed recently stated that he would not contest for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket if Jonathan decides to run. Mohammed, who served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under Jonathan, has publicly urged Jonathan to consider running for the presidency in 2027. He believes that Jonathan’s experience would make him an excellent candidate for a second term.
Mohammed emphasized that if Jonathan decides to run, party affiliation would not be a significant issue. He expressed his willingness to support Jonathan wholeheartedly, citing his leadership experience and past performance as reasons for his endorsement. Mohammed argued that Jonathan’s previous tenure was marked by exemplary leadership and foresight, making him a strong candidate for the presidency.
The political calculation behind this push also includes considerations of regional balance. With President Bola Tinubu expected to complete his first term by May 2027, the notion is that Jonathan’s candidacy could ensure fairness in regional rotation, as the South would have completed eight years by 2031. Jonathan, who served as president from 2010 to 2015, had conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 elections.
The broader political context includes dissatisfaction in the North with current leadership, as evidenced by recent protests. Some Northern leaders believe Jonathan’s return could address perceived regional imbalances.
