fafali says
making my mark
some may have a dramatic way
of making their mark
I have a simple way
of making my mark
so I nurse a seed
of adanutsi
at my backyard
as the seeds grow,
I plant them on a vacant land,
where trees, that once stood on its surface,
been turned into timber,
roofing buildings
turned into beds,
sofas and chairs,
at the service of people
so I plant nursed adanutsi seeds
on this vacant land
and water the seeds
morning and evening
at each watering,
I look into the future,
that if the seeds grow
to become a tree,
and mature into fruit-bearing trees,
passersby will pick
its fruits and eat
to savour its taste
passersby will sit
under its shade,
to take a rest
from life’s toil
that the vegetation
of the trees,
will push back
the feared encroaching illness,
of dying forests
the cry of humanity
I hear
anytime I step out
one other thing
driving me
to plant the seeds
for I’m told
the air that goes through my nostrils
and travel into my body
helping me to well-function,
is a gift from the trees
so as I, fafali,
hint from the start
this is my way
of making my mark
to push back
the encroaching illness
of dying forests
