Food safety and hygiene are of utmost importance for businesses, as it helps to protect the health of consumers from foodborne illnesses and food poisoning.
Hon. Ajimotokin made this call today at A Day Training for Food handlers in Irele Local Government held at Irele Ultra Modern Civic Centre in Ode Irele.
The honourable Chairman urges the food handlers to always ensure that their business environments are always safe and hygienic for the benefit of themselves and consumers.
“Ensure the area which you are working in is clean and hygienic. This involves thoroughly cleaning and sanitising the workspace, utensils and equipment before cooking, in-between cooking tasks and after cooking”
“Cooking utensils and equipment, such as chopping boards, knives and mixers, must be thoroughly cleaned between dealing with foods. For example, either a separate chopping board must be used or it must be thoroughly cleaned between chopping raw chicken and vegetables. If this is not done, the bacteria from the raw chicken will transfer onto the vegetables and cross-contamination of foods will occur”.
“Washing hands can keep you healthy and prevent the spread of respiratory and diarrheal infections from one person to the next. Germs can spread from other people or surfaces when you: Touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, Prepare or eat food and drinks with unwashed hands”.
He therefore urges food handlers to ensure that their workers and even consumers wash their hands at the point of entry their business environments.
Hon. Ajimotokin stressed that there are no ways that pests or insects could enter the workplace, through keeping the area clean, using pest control sprays, and covering food appropriately.
While handling the training Certificate for food, drinks/beverage handlers to the Director of Environmental Services, San. Orimogunje Enikanoselu, he lauded him for his assiduous efforts in transforming environmental services in Irele Local Government.
Hon. Ajimotokin also hailed food handlers in Irele Local Government for their impressive turn-up and vowed that food handlers without certificate in the Local Government would not allow operating adding that the safety of the people is a top priority of his administration. In the flag off alongside with the honourable Chairman were: the Vice Chairman, Hon. Jide Akinfe, the HOLGA, Mr. Vincent Aknimuyisitan, Director of Environmental Services, San. Orimogunje Enikanoselu, Director of Community Department, Pastor J.B Babaloa, Chairman House Committee on Health and Environment, Hon. Femi Aladekoye, Director of information, Mrs Adeyehun among others.
