Afenifere has argued that the government should not exacerbate the suffering of citizens who are merely expressing their grievances over the widespread hunger. The statement emphasized that protesting against debilitating economic policies and fuel shortages, particularly those resulting from the privatization of the NNPC and the monopolization of petrol stations, is not treason.
The group highlighted the detrimental effects of the current economic strategy, noting that the continued importation of fuel, supported by scarce government dollars, has led to further devaluation of the naira. This situation has triggered cost-push hyperinflation, which has been ineffectively addressed with high interest rates that are stifling the economy and worsening unemployment and poverty.
According to Afenifere, this scenario represents an irresponsible economic strangulation of the masses, equating to economic treason.
