The difficulties we face as a nation are numerous and significant, including economic hardships, security challenges, and social inequities. I want to assure you that these issues are not ignored. The government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is actively engaged in efforts to address these challenges. However, progress requires time, cooperation, and a stable environment.
In his statement, the Chairman highlighted various programs designed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration aimed at supporting citizens, including the Nigerian Student Loan Scheme, NG-CARES, increased funding for critical sectors of infrastructure, social security interventions, and the introduction of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative, which aims to reduce transportation costs in the country. The Chairman notes that these presidential reforms are approaching fruition and are expected to yield positive economic growth and improved national security.
While acknowledging the right to protest, the Chairman appealed to the citizens of Irele Local Government and all Nigerians to exercise patience and engage in dialogue, suggesting that the timing of the protests is inappropriate given the positive developments in the economy.
I earnestly appeal to the organizers and participants of the planned protests to reconsider their approach. While the right to protest is a fundamental democratic principle, it is crucial to recognize that such actions can inadvertently lead to unintended consequences, particularly if they are hijacked by individuals with ulterior motives. History has shown that peaceful protests can sometimes devolve into chaos, resulting in the destruction of public and private property, disruption of economic activities, and even loss of life, the Chairman said.
To avoid such outcomes, the Chairman encourages all stakeholders to pursue dialogue and constructive engagement as the primary means of addressing grievances. This approach not only prevents potential violence and unrest but also fosters an environment where sustainable solutions can be developed through collective effort and understanding. Engaging in open, honest discussions with the government and other relevant authorities can lead to meaningful reforms and improvements in our socio-economic conditions.
