life a metaphor by Sedinam

life, a metaphor
a young man went off to study at nunyafe learning centre

there, the young man encountered metaphor
and got enthused about it
and spent all his time,
in nunyafe centre,
learning about metaphor

one day, on his way to a nearby town,
the young man met an elderly woman and both struck up a lively conversation

the elderly woman then asked the young man, what do you do?

I study metaphor,
came the reply from the young man

and what is this metaphor?
asked the elderly woman

the young man then went into a long talk, explaining metaphor from what books at nunyafe learning centre have said about metaphor

said the elderly woman to the young man,
I have never in my life, studied metaphor
but I can tell you one thing
this whole thing,
everyone calls life,
is one big,
intricate metaphor

anyone who
has lived life,
has known metaphor,

anyone who has lived life,
has seen metaphor
also anyone who has lived life,
has experienced metaphor

so what is, metaphor?
asked the young man

addressing the elderly woman, the young man said,
your take on metaphor,
differs from what nunyafe books say about metaphor

said the elderly woman,
your long talk about metaphor baffles me
and I find it hard to follow

but I can assure you,
without the least doubt that,
this whole thing,
about this thing,
they call life
is one big,
intricate web of metaphor

the young man left thinking about what the elderly woman said

that

life is one big,
intricate web of metaphor

this is far from what he has swallowed from the pages of the countless books in nunyafe centre

from then on,
the young man could see,
the elderly woman’s take on metaphor,
seems to better encapsulate the essence of metaphor,

that
life is indeed,
one big,
intricate web of metaphor
